It’s the second week of May and we’re well in to the summer of 2012. In preparation for the exciting months ahead, it was announced last week by re-elected mayor of London, Boris Johnson, that City Hall will be transformed in to London House this summer, serving as a business hub during the Games. The House will hold debates, seminars and events for international businesses to network with UK leaders in the technology, creative, environmental and financial services sectors. As part of this, The London Business Network is co-ordinating a series of London 2012-related business conferences at London House which will showcase key sectors in the UK economy that have helped to deliver a successful London 2012 Games. The events will provide a unique networking opportunity for both International and London businesses.

Announcements were also made in relation to the opening plans for the future Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The London Legacy Development Corporation unveiled their plans which will see the Park transform from an Olympic site into a brand new piece of the city, incorporating lavish parklands and waterways, new neighbourhoods and world class sports and entertainment venues. Gates for the new park will begin to open from July 2013, with the first large scale event, a two day festival of cycling, scheduled to take place next summer.

In celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, a series of events have been planned in London between Saturday 2 June and Tuesday 5 June. Celebrations will take place at various locations across London resulting in unusually busy periods within the Centre of the Capital. It has been advised that anyone intending to travel within that area at this time should plan their journeys in advance. For updates on the travel situation see www.tfl.gov.uk/diamondjubilee

To stay abreast of changes affecting travel through the busiest periods, TfL will continually update their online resources to help you plan your journey by road, tube, and bus.You can also check for cycle availability online by visiting the Docking stations status on the TfL website.

CSSC Key Messages
Top Lines The Olympic and Paralympic Games are a once in a life time opportunity. It is a top priority of the Government and everyone involved to ensure they are safe and secure, something that London, the UK and the world can enjoy and that they help deliver a lasting legacy we can be proud of.
Partnership working between the Government, police and businesses is key to achieving this.
Police and Government want to make sure businesses have the information they need before, during and after the Games to help keep people safe, keep businesses secure and to support the security operation. This is what the Cross-sector Safety and Security Communications partnership is for.
The CSSC uses a range of channels to communicate safety and security information to the private sector with one voice, whilst also addressing concerns about the security issues that matter most to business.
The Games have provided a powerful catalyst for this enhancement to public-private communication but the driving force for change has always been the goal of making lasting improvements to safety and security communication with the wider private sector.
Businesses in London can sign up to get this information now, free. To register for information updates on safety and security activity in London now, go to www.neighbourhoodlink.met.police.uk and follow the Metropolitan Police Service at www.twitter.com/metpoliceuk and www.twitter.com/co11metpolice (for public order updates).
Detailed QnA
What is CSSC ? CSSC stands for Cross-sector Safety and Security Communications. It represents a partnership between, the Police, Government and industry that brings businesses and business networks to ensure businesses receive the information they need, when they need it, to stay safe and secure in the lead up to and during and after the Games.
To do this, CSSC builds on existing (but specialist) successful and proven security networks such as Project Griffin (security sector) and Sisterbanks (finance sector), to provide a means for the Police and Government to communicate with the wider private sector – businesses big both big and small, with ‘one voice’ on safety and security, as well as to receive feedback from business on the security issues important to them.
CSSC does not provide information on travel disruption (for example that which may affect your staff travelling to work, or deliveries being made to your business). To find out how you might be affected by this and what you can do to prepare, please visit www.getaheadofthegames.com .
How does CSSC affect my business? CSSC plays an important part in helping keep your people safe and your business secure by providing you with accurate, timely and authoritative safety and security information to help to help you prepare and respond where necessary, before, during and after the Games.
How does CSSC work? CSSC provides accurate and timely safety and security information for business through a range of channels including:
o The Metropolitan Police Neighbourhood Link message alert service (www.neighbourhoodlink.met.police.uk) and MPS twitter feeds (follow us at www.twitter.com/co11metpolice and www.twitter.com/metpoliceuk ) for information on safety and security activity in London
o An interactive network of representatives from across the private sector known as industry sector leads (ISLs) who have coordinated their own extensive networks
o A network of participating business and trade associations.
This work will be managed by Police and business representatives working together and co-located during times of need. This arrangement is known as the ‘CSSC hub’ which will be hosted by Transport for London from the beginning of the Torch relay through to the end of the Games.
CSSC has been modelled on two successful (but specialist) schemes that have been run in the financial sector for more than a decade and were deployed during incidents such as the 2005 London bombings and the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The Bank of England brings considerable experience to bear, acting as the co-ordinator of the initial contact between the authorities and the business sector representatives in the event of an incident.
Each business sector is represented by one or more industry sector leads who work with the Metropolitan Police voluntarily to share advice with their sectors and to provide expert feedback on behalf of business.
Who runs CSSC? CSSC is led by the Metropolitan Police in partnership with the Home Office, business and a range of key partners.
Who are your key partners? CSSC is based on a broad collaboration involving many different organisations, including the Greater London Authority’s London Resilience team, Transport for London, City of London Police and the British Transport Police to name but a few.
Where do I get more information on CSSC? For press / media enquiries please contact Eapter@londonfirst.co.uk . Alternatively, you may like to contact your local trade association who may be able to help.
How do I ensure my business is linked into CSSC? For safety and security information relevant to London you can sign up to the Metropolitan Police’s Neighbourhood Link message alert service www.neighbourhoodlink.met.police.uk and follow them at www.twitter.com/co11metpolice and www.twitter.com/metpoliceuk.
What is Neighbourhood Link? You should sign up to neighbourhood link to receive essential safety and security information and advice from the Metropolitan Police relevant on relevant activity in London and your local area. You can sign up to this service at www.neighbourhoodlink.met.police.uk
What can I do now? Sign up to Neighbourhood Link (www.neighbourhoodlink.met.police.uk ) and follow the Metropolitan police at follow us at www.twitter.com/co11metpolice (public order)and www.twitter.com/metpoliceuk for information on safety and security activity in London. Ensure your business continuity, resilience and or security plans are up-to-date and take account of the Games. Help prepare your business for the Games by consulting the guidance located at www.london2012/get-involved/business-network/preparing-your-business.php and on the Metropolitan Police website at www.content.met.police.uk/Site/olympicsadvice Consult www.getaheadofthegames.com to make sure you are aware how the roads and public transport system will be affected by the Games.
If Asked:
Is the CSSC only for businesses in London? The CSSC is led by the Metropolitan Police and whilst it primarily focuses on businesses in London, the businesses and trade associations that form the major part of its network are both local, national and international.

Re.: London Architecture Walks – Jubilee & Olympic London Tours

I hope you are well. As London approaches an historic summer, London Architecture Walks is pleased to offer two special commemorative walks. Jubilee London explores the role that London’s architecture has played in H.M. The Queen’s historic 60-year reign and Olympic London covers the spectacular site of the 2012 Games. Our Olympic London walk will run throughout the year, including during the Olympic Games themselves.

We also offer a wide range of permanent walks, some of which may be located within your BID constituency. Additionally, we run special walks at Hallowe’en and Christmas. Walks can be scheduled for any time of your choosing and we are also happy to tailor walks to your particular theme or requirements. You can view some of our feedback here.

As London’s only dedicated architectural walks provider, we believe that our tours’ unique focus on the special character of London’s buildings and public spaces – both new and old as well as famous and obscure – will be of particular interest to all those with a passionate interest in London, including your members, staff and stakeholders.

Therefore, we very much hope to have the opportunity to host a walk for you soon. We also look forward to your joining us in celebrating this exceptional year for our great capital city. Many thanks for your time.

Kindest regards

Drivers in London can now find out where traffic is busy, or may become congested, before they hit the road, with the Mayor and Transport for London’s new range of enhanced travel information for road users, which identifies traffic hotspots and makes congestion easier to avoid. The new information tool will sit alongside other interventions to smooth traffic flow, such as the tighter regulation of roadworks, to help prevent long queues in the Capital.

By simply visiting the Transport for London website (www.tfl.gov.uk/trafficnews), motorists can now gain a bird’s eye view of London’s traffic hotspots to see where traffic is building up and which areas to avoid. This includes access to a network of 170 ‘jam cams’, as well as information on incidents that may effect their journey. A live Twitter feed, @TFL TrafficNews, will also carry up to the minute information, and particular roads and routes are searchable using hashtags (#).

This live traffic news data is also being made freely available to all software and app developers, and all providers of live travel news are urged to get their information straight from the source so that motorists have access to the most accurate and up-to-the-minute traffic information.

Please feel free to share this information with your staff, constituents, members or residents. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

24 January 2012
Dear Colleague,
Transport for London publishes the fourth Travel in London Report
Transport for London has published its fourth annual Travel in London report.
This is available at: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/corporate/travel-inlondon-
report-4.pdf
This updated report provides a comprehensive analysis and interpretation of
trends in travel and transport in the context of the implementation of the Mayor
of London’s Transport Strategy, and spotlights other developments of
contemporary interest, such as the impacts of the removal of the western
extension of the congestion charging scheme.
The fourth Travel in London report highlights how Londoner’s travel behaviour,
and the extent and performance of the transport networks, has changed over
the last decade, and points out key developments in the latest year. Key
highlights include:
- Growing demand for travel, with strong growth between 2009 and
2010, in spite of the economic recession: 24.8 million trips were made
on an average day in 2010 – an increase of 1 per cent over the previous
year and 9 per cent more than in 2000. Patronage on the Underground
grew particularly strongly, with 5 per cent more passenger kilometres
travelled in 2010/11 compared to 2009/10.
- An unprecedented modal shift of 7.5 percentage points away from car
use onto public transport, walking and cycling: continuing the
established trend with a further 0.6 per cent shift to public transport
between 2009 and 2010. Without this modal shift, there would have been
one million more car driver trips in London in 2010.
- Fewer car journeys: traffic on London’s roads fell by six per cent between 2000 and 2009, with a further fall of 0.9 per cent in vehicle kilometres driven over the most recent year.
- Greater public transport capacity: including 33 per cent more bus kilometres and eight per cent more Underground train kilometres operated in 2010/11 compared to 2000/01;
- Sustained improvements in the reliability of bus and Underground services: as has now been the case for several years, key indicators of service performance were either at, or close to their recorded highs in 2010/11, with 97 per cent of scheduled kilometres operated on the bus networks and 96 per cent on the Underground network.
- Continued strong growth in cycling in London, reflecting initiatives such as Barclays Cycle Hire and Superhighways: the number of journey stages made by bicycle in 2010 increased by 6 per cent from the previous year, an increase of 70 per cent since 2001. There was a 15 per cent increase in the number of cycles counted on the main Transport for London road network between 2009 and 2010.
- Continued improvements to road safety and crime: 2010 saw a 10.6 per cent reduction, relative to 2009, in the number of people killed or seriously injured on London’s roads, continuing the long-standing trend of reduction and now standing 57 per cent lower than the average between 1994 and 1998.
The report also focuses on two developments of particular contemporary interest – cycling in London and the impacts of the removal of the Western Extension to the central London congestion charging scheme (effective from the start of 2011).
- The report contains a summary of cycle trends in London and a comprehensive update on the Mayor’s cycling revolution in London, which has seen the successful launch of Barclays Cycle Hire for members and casual users, and four Barclays Cycle Superhighways, alongside a range of interventions to improve conditions for cyclists. Nearly a quarter of Londoners cycled in 2010 and the number of London households that
owned a bicycle increased by 8 per cent from the previous year to 35 per cent; there were more than 2 million bicycles in the city. Investment in cycling is delivering results: nearly half of Barclays Cycle Hire members had been inspired by the scheme to start cycling in London, and one in five journeys on the two Barclays Cycle Superhighways launched in 2011 would not previously have been cycled.
- The traffic impacts of the removal of the Western Extension to the congestion charging zone have been relatively benign, with the observed increase of 8 per cent in traffic entering the former zone in 2011 compared to the equivalent period of 2010. This is towards the lower end of TfL’s range of expectation. The equivalent observed increase in congestion was 3 per cent – again at the lower end of TfL’s range of expectation, and in part reflecting effective road network management.
Yours faithfully,
Michèle Dix
Managing Director, TfL Planning

Dear Stakeholder

Clean Air – Engine Idling

As you may be aware, the Mayor of London’s Clean Air Fund is trialling a package of targeted measures to improve air quality in London. The Mayor recognises that poor air quality is a serious health issue and is determined to reduce its impact. The majority of London already meets the European limit values for PM10 – a pollutant arising mostly from traffic emissions and a risk to health – but there are some local hotspots which exceed the limit for daily average PM10.

As part of this programme of work, Transport for London is launching a pan London awareness raising and marketing campaign to deter unnecessary engine idling, which is aimed at all drivers in the capital. The initiative is being delivered in partnership with Asthma UK and the Automobile Association. Drivers are being asked to switch off their engines whilst parked, loading or waiting at the roadside to help improve the health of Londoners.

This is to give you prior notification that a media launch of the campaign will take place on Tuesday 10 January 2012 with Kulveer Ranger, Director for Environment and Digital London, and representatives from Asthma UK. Poster and radio advertising can be seen and heard already in the capital having gone live in early January and signage is being deployed in fifty bays in London.

Delivering the No Engine Idling campaign effectively, requires the continuous support of organisations and individuals who operate, work or live in London. TfL has been collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders in the lead up to the launch and is thankful for the widespread support from stakeholders including the major commercial driver representative bodies, fleet operators, cycle and health organisations and boroughs. If you support the aims of the campaign, I would be grateful if you could make your own stakeholders, members or constituents aware.

A full brief is attached along with a poster image and signage which is currently being deployed in fifty bays in London. Further information can be found on a dedicated website from 9 January 2012 – www.tfl.gov.uk/switchoffengine

Yours sincerely
